When an emergency arises, it’s comforting to know that skilled emergency care is available at St. Joseph Hospital. The physicians and experienced staff at St. Joe’s ER provide a full range of emergency services using progressive technologies.
St. Joe is an accredited chest pain center. This means that processes are in place to quickly diagnose and treat chest pain patients. The emergency department houses specialized cardiac rooms, and nurses specially trained in cardiac care staff the center, which is accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
St. Joe is a certified stroke center. This means that a multidisciplinary team is ready to provide the critical elements needed to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients 24/7. The center is certified by The Joint Commission as a primary stroke center and has the Gold Seal of Approval ™ for quality and safety.
St. Joe is a verified burn center. The center, which is verified in both adult and pediatric burn care, is the region’s only verified burn center and is one of only three in Indiana. A multidisciplinary team of staff provides the specialized care and resources needed to treat patients burned by fires, explosions or industrial accidents. St. Joe’s burn teams have been providing specialized care to the community for more than 40 years. The center is verified by the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association, a rare distinction for a nonuniversity program.
Conditions treated in the ER include:
- Abdominal pain
- Blue, purple or gray lips or skin
- Broken bones, sprains and strains
- Chest pain and other signs of heart attack
- Confusion, numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg on one side of the body and other signs of stroke
- Difficulty breathing
- Fever, flu-like symptoms (vomiting and diarrhea), sore throats and coughs
- Unconsciousness or no response
- Uncontrollable bleeding
