GO RED FOR WOMEN LUNCHEON AIMS TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT HEART DISEASE

(FORT WAYNE, Ind., Oct. 29, 2015) – Currently, some 8 million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in three American women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat. This represents a significant disconnect between women’s beliefs about their heart health and reality.

On Friday, Nov. 6, women across the region will join together in the fight for their lives at the Northeast Indiana Go Red for Women luncheon. Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s national movement to end heart disease and stroke in women.

The luncheon, which will be held at the Grand Wayne Convention Center from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will feature the Heart Beats expo, free health screenings, a silent auction, CPR training, a heart healthy lunch, panel discussion and passionate survivor stories.

Two Lutheran Hospital directors have led the 2015 Go Red for Women efforts in the region. Joyce Walz, executive director of cardiac services, Lutheran Hospital, and Krista Peak, executive director, Lutheran Children’s Hospital, are this year’s Go Red for Women campaign chairs.

“Every event is an opportunity for our community to connect with a common goal of making our region healthier and free of cardiovascular diseases, as well as raise awareness of the impact of heart disease on women,” said Walz. “We also get to celebrate the successes we’ve had in saving women’s lives.”

This annual event draws more than 300 women who are passionate about ending heart disease and stroke, and aims to raise nearly $125,000 to support local efforts to improve women’s health.

“The Go Red for Women movement is so critical in raising awareness and funds for lifesaving research and education programs in our communities, and it has been wonderful to work with such a dynamic group of volunteers in making this year’s campaign a success,” said Peak.
